2022: A Year of Growth

We're Still Celebrating: A Look Back + A Step Forward

Raise a drink with us for a year of celebration, education, entertainment, community — and GROWTH!

Were reflecting on the adventure that 2022 brought us and we simply couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making our 20th Anniversary one that we’ll never forget.

Here’s a look back on some of our favorite moments of the year…

Create Community: Spaces for Discovery Public Art Installation

Artists Jeremy Barnett and Jason Maracani, along with the team here at the SCA, worked with more than 225 volunteers to build 7 interactive public art installations in 4 communities. Create Community: Spaces for Discovery took 18 months to plan, 2 months to install, and lived throughout Saugatuck, Douglas, Fennville, and Holland for 4 months. Over 600 students from West Michigan participated in building, interacting, and enjoying these installations.

A bold theater season full of glamour, humor, and color

After two long years, guests were welcomed back into the SCA theater for a full season of big, bold, Broadway performances with Legally Blonde + Little Shop of Horrors. We laughed, we cried, and (to quote Elle Woods) were all a little better than we were before.

Introducing creative outlets to local students

“A tiny seed becomes a sequoia given time and tending. We may not be there to see it’s flourishing but we can plant the seeds and tend the saplings.” – Molly Costello, SCA Exhibition Artist

Throughout the year, our education team worked with students all over West Michigan to grow and tend their seeds (both metaphorically and literally). Our programming, full of big and small moments alike, provided unique creative outlets to express themselves and continue learning in ways that inspired excitement.

From our Children’s Film Festival to Visiting Artist Program in schools — we brought new experiences to thousands of West Michigan students.

Students weren’t the only ones who were learning this year – our artists were too. All of our Visiting Artists worked with the SCA Education Team to learn how to teach in the classroom. Though it was many of their first times as teachers, we are certain it won’t be the last.

We didn’t stop at early education + classroom experiences. Were following along with our previous Growing Young Artist students to build relationships, career opportunities, and connections for their futures.

FREE Community Celebrations with thousands of friends

Over 2,000 community members, tourists, and special guests joined us for our FREE Community CelebrationsJump Into Summer featuring The Accidentals and A Bright Night featuring the silent disco. Creatives of all ages got hands-on with artists, danced all day and night, met new friends, and enjoyed new experiences in the arts.

Thanks for celebrating 20 years on purpose with us
