A Taste of Michigan: A Fresh Coast Films Roadshow

Take a seat in the boutique theater at the SCA for this special one-time program that includes a selection of short films from Fresh Coast Film of Marquette, MI. Explore a diverse array of topics, tones, and creative moments through the magic of film. Before the show starts, fuel up with a plate of unique flavors by our Creative Fellow, Chef Mindy Trafman. Don’t want the fun to end after the show? Head over to our friends at Outside Coffee Company for an afterparty to keep the good times rolling.

About the Event

In collaboration with Fresh Coast Film Festival, Outside Coffee Company, Woosah, and featuring artists Mindy Trafman and Rae Lang.

Founded in 2016 by artist adventurers Aaron Peterson, Bugsy Sailor and Bill Thompson and set against the spectacular beauty of Marquette in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Fresh Coast Film Festival Roadshow is a highly-curated series of stops in the homestate, showcasing the best short films from eight years of programming with like-minded organizations and communities who share their values of adventurism, conservationism and inspiration.

From playlist to plate, SCA’s 2023 Creative Fellow, Chef Mindy Trafman, will create fresh and flavorful bites inspired by the shorts on screen. Before the films start rolling, enjoy a taste of what you’ll see in this multisensory event that is sure to leave you feeling rooted in the local flavors of the fresh coast. What better way to spend an early fall evening than with a delicious fusion of films and food?

This special one-time program includes a selection of short films diverse in topics, tone and creativity paired together to provoke, entertain, and deepen our awareness and understanding of food and agriculture, sustainability, and our relationship to what we eat. Like a great meal itself, the hour-long mix-tape of shorts has been personally prepared for this event by Fresh Coast’s film ‘chef’ Aaron Peterson.

As a special treat, you’ll have the exclusive opportunity to meet artist Rae Lang, the visionary and designer behind this year’s festival poster! Rae will be onsite signing posters and selling prints.

Don’t want the party to stop just because the screen does? Roll on over the bridge to Rae’s creative hub, Outside Coffee Company.

In Partnership With

Held annually in October during the height of fall color season, #freshcoasting means finding unexpected stories that will surprise and provoke you, many from right here in the Great Lakes region, and made by talented artists who call this special place home.

Coming up October 19-22, 2023 in the Lake Superior harbor town of Marquette, Fresh Coast Film Festival is grounded where the waves of an inland sea crash on the bedrock remains of the ancient Huron Mountains and within the ancestral lands of the Three Fires Confederacy of Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi peoples.

The festival combines outdoor recreation and adventures with screenings, special events, and meaningful conversations between artists and audiences – with social opportunities to interact with environmental thinkers, outdoor athletes, and media professionals while enjoying all the local culture Marquette has to offer.

Mindy Trafman

Born and raised in Chicago, Mindy Trafman studied elementary education with an emphasis on art education at Northern Illinois University. While attending school and teaching, Mindy was bit by the restaurant bug. Working a decade with Rich Melman’s Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, she opened several restaurants from Chicago to LA, worked another decade with Debra Sharp’s rock & roll catering and restaurant group, she developed a love for hospitality. It was at Cru Wine Bar where her passion for wine and food began to grow. She explored wine further by teaching classes at Chicago’s Loyola University while running the Lush Wine and Spirits shops, which led her to become a sommelier.

In 2014, Mindy moved to Saugatuck to help a good friend open The Kirby, an intimate hotel and restaurant in Douglas, Michigan. She had spent a lot of time in the kitchen and fell in love with the abundance of Michigan farmland giving the most beautiful produce in the country and challenged herself to find interesting preparations for these gems. She went on to open Coast 236 in Saugatuck and recently started Somm + Seeds, a catering and consulting company where she caters all types of events from in-home food + wine classes to small tasting menu dinners to large-scale weddings. You may spot her around town hosting an event or class at some of the local restaurants, wineries, or event venues.

Rae Lang

Rae Lang is the Founder and Artist behind Woosah Outfitters based in Grand Rapids, MI with storefronts in Grand Rapids and Douglas, MI.

“Woosah is a slang word that brings a sense of inner peace, calmness and stillness when said out loud. Take a deep breath in, and exhale; that’s Woosah.” For Lang there are two things that bring them Woosah: spending days in the studio carving and printing woodblocks, and being emerged in the stillness and beauty of nature. “I believe that each person has a hobby, an interest or a passion that brings a sense of inner peace and stillness. A natural, subconsious feeling of enlightenment. Maybe its snowboarding, road trips, surfing, drawing, hiking, or dancing in the comfort of your home. Whatever it may be, I encourage each person to find their Woosah and to spread it as much and as often as possible. Help me spread the Woosah!” – Rae Lang

ON POSTER DESIGN: “This design was inspired by my various experiences traveling up the U.P., biking, camping in our van, hiking along the black rocks and jumpin’ in the lake. Always feels like you’re just scratching the surface up there, so much to explore!”
