Join us for a free community celebration marking the opening of plastic plastic, akeylah wellington’s fall exhibition. This event closes out SCA’s 2026 season theme, Flow, moving from the stillness of the gallery into motion on the dance floor. Explore wellington’s newest work, try a hands-on lacecraft activity inspired by her process, then head to the dance floor for a 2000s-themed dance party led by 2026 SCA Creative Fellow Heather Winia. This is a free event. Pre-registration is encouraged.
Schedule of Events
7:00 PM — Gallery Gathering
Explore akeylah wellington’s newest work in the SCA gallery. Try a lacecraft activity with our partner, Hot Glue Creux.
8:00–10:00 PM — Dance Party
Move from the gallery to the dance floor (lobby or pavilion, weather permitting) for a DJ set of early-2000s hits and retro dance instruction with Heather Winia.
Programming Information
Craft Activity: Hot Glue Creux
Hot Glue Creux, an adult craft club that builds community through art socials, workshops, and creative partnerships, joins us on site for hands-on lacecraft activities inspired by akeylah wellington’s work. Make your own pony bead craft, lizard or star, or pixel tapestry to take home. This activity is free of charge.
Game Room
Take a break from the dance floor with board games, like Ticket to Ride, Kerplunk, Taboo, Chutes and Ladders, Scattergories, Pictionary, and Hungry Hungry Hippos.
The Artist
akeylah wellington is a sculptor, tapestry weaver, and hard dough bread enthusiast. Her work reviews 2000s visual culture and ironies through the lens of craft. Her work is concerned with humor, as a noun, connoting comedy, and a verb, meaning to endure. Her attention to the aughts’ technological and political developments is an attempt to make sense of her experience of loss, girlhood, generational inheritances, and time. Her work has been shown at Blah Blah Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), The Anderson (Richmond, VA), and Pond Gallery (Fayetteville, AR). She is a former artist-in-residence of Visible Records and Wassaic Project, a 2025 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award recipient, and a museum educator.
The Exhibition
Exhibition Celebration: Saturday, October 24, 2026
The show plastic plastic is a celebration of plastic lace craft. It features 16 oversized hand knotted objects made using scoubidou stitches, a hand weaving practice more commonly known as scoobies, boondoggles, or lanyards. Each strand of plastic lace is made of woven pony beads, a traditional Black hair ornament for braided styles. The objects will rest, slump, and lean against the walls and the floor of the gallery in neon, pastel, and pearlized color ways.
