About the Class
Learn the art of basket weaving from Holland based teacher and artist, Avril Wiers. Designed for the novice weaver, this class will explore the basics of creating a basket using a Cape Cod Blueberry pattern. Plain weave, continuous weaving, handle application, cut and tuck, and rim lashing are a few of the skills you will gain in this workshop! You will leave with a 6 x 7 inch square bottom basket with a handle that you can use to hold and collect anything from berries, to thread, or other small goods! No experience is necessary, all materials provided.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Avril Wiers
Art is woven throughout every aspect of Avril’s life—from early days pricking her fingers while her ever-patient mother taught her to sew, to now spending snow days teaching her own daughter the rhythm of the spinning wheel. Avril spends long summer days foraging for natural colors to use as dye. She has farmed rabbits and muskoxen in Alaska for their fine fibers for spinning and she has knit more sweaters than she can count. Lately, she’s been taken with weaving, the rhythmic “over, under, over, under” becoming a mantra of calm in trying times. When she’s not teaching high school environmental science, she can usually be found creating.
