Adventure and art collide on the big screen and beyond at the annual Art Out Loud Festival at the SCA. Take a deep dive into cultures, stories, and traditions from around the globe through film, music, food, and more. Art Out Loud is the intersection of visual, internal, audio, and performance art. This immersive experience engages all senses, and highlights the impact of artful collaboration.

What is Art Out Loud?

Adventure and art collide on the big screen and beyond at the annual Art Out Loud Festival at Saugatuck Center for the Arts. Take a deep dive into cultures, stories, and traditions from around the globe through film, music, food, and more. Open your mind and heart through reels of award-winning short films provided by Mountainfilm on Tour (via the acclaimed Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride, CO), explore unique flavors inspired by films with SCA Creative Fellow Mindy Trafman, celebrate your story through journaling with SCA Exhibition Artist Ruth Crowe, and enjoy the Art Coast journey with other community partners in Saugatuck, Douglas, Fennville, and Holland.

Art Out Loud takes over Saugatuck

Throughout the month of March, we’ll bring heart-pounding action, thought-provoking moments, and feel-good stories to the screen with the 6th annual Mountainfilm on Tour: Saugatuck. Kicking off with the Children’s Film Festival for our educational partners.

Children’s Film Festival for Schools

K-12 students travel the world and dive deep into heroic personal stories through the power of film. Inspiring stories about adventurous and brave youth their age, vibrant indigenous and multicultural stories, and moving animal rescue efforts are just some of the themes explored. Each collection highlights the importance of our connection to the land, as well as the importance of being brave and following your passion!

Film for Families

Gather with your friends and family to get inspired, get creative, and get moving! Join us in the theater at the SCA for adventurous family-friendly short films from Mountainfilm on Tour, then meet us in the lobby and outdoors for engaging all-ages activities.  Community partners will help bring the films to life with outdoor flair!

Art Out Loud Community Festival

Engage all five senses at an immersive experience intersecting film, food, music, and visual art at Art Out Loud, only at the SCA. Packed with action, adventure, and excitement – Art Out Loud will expand horizons while providing exciting entertainment. We’re serving up a day full of creativity through award-winning short documentaries provided by Mountainfilm on Tour out of Telluride, CO. Spend your day exploring cultures, traditions, and inspiring stories from around the world with three screenings of films that will leave you breathless, bring you to tears, and leave you applauding for more. Between screenings, meet Artist Ruth Crowe and dive into her impactful exhibition The Journal Project. In addition, throughout the day SCA Creative Fellow Mindy Trafman will surprise and delight you with creative food options inspired by the films, art, and music.

Outdoor Exploration

Find inspiration and all-ages fun on Friday for the kick off of Art Out Loud at the Saugatuck Dunes State Park from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Beginning at the State Park parking lot, stroll down Beach Trail for a lantern-lit family-friendly hike. Grab a coffee or hot chocolate from Outside Coffee Company to fuel up for the adventure, play a game and join the fun with Saugatuck Brewing Co, then join the SCA at its new Mobile Art Truck (aka The WiP) for a make-and-take project crafting a paper lantern! Keep an eye out on the trail for hidden treasures and free giveaways from our friends at Woosah Outfitters and Landsharks. This event is FREE and open to the public.

This outdoor celebration is in partnership with Landsharks, Woosah Outfitters, Outside Coffee Company, Scrapyard Climbing, Saugatuck-Douglas Library, and Saugatuck Brewing Co.
