Remnant

Grand Rapids-based multidisciplinary artist, Shannon Mack, will occupy our corridor for the entire year of 2024. Throughout this year, we’ll see her works change, grow, and share important messages through mixed-media. This summer, we’ll explore Shannon’s exhibition “Remnant”, a testimony of our curiosity and perseverance in the face of chaos.

The Exhibit

Grand Rapids-based artist, Shannon Mack, joins us for a year-long corridor exhibition. Throughout the year, we’ll see these works change, grow, and share important messages.

Summer Exhibit, Remnant:

Sweeping pendulum limbs, staccato tip toes skipping into a heap on the ground. Metronome hearts, beating through rising and falling rib cages. Gazes fixed on an invisible moving target, with the steadiness of a hawk, scanning for a branch to land. Primal, glistening deep blue swaths of paint stains are all that remain. Dragging inky palms, catching a fleeting moment of contact. Evidence of continuous attempts to move into what is not certain.

Observing. Motion into static. Static into motion. Interpreting mid-collapse; a cluster of pulsing bodies. Reference versus memory. Past brought into present. Brush strokes focused and free. Brush strokes frustrated and tortured. Destruction into conception. Searching strokes, laying a web of catharsis. Evidence of continuous attempts to move into what is not certain.

Two parallel experiences intermingle when drop cloth that was placed beneath painted dancers is stitched together with drop cloth that I used beneath me in the creation of their depiction. Both, remains of fluid human movements, conscious and subconscious. These surfaces are our stories, testimony of our curiosity and perseverance in the face of chaos. They collect traces of our underlying animal instincts, and perhaps our perpetual and inexplicable urge to transmute the experience of being here in a physical body.

Spring Exhibition, Re-Wild
Archived: February 9 – May 10, 2024
I am born. I cry, I laugh, I scream, I dance, I scribble, I fall, I jump, I swing, I build, I run at full speed, I roll down hills, I knock on friends’ doors, I grow. Watching, learning, analyzing, mimicking, I begin to move in pre-prescribed ways. I must be pleasant, accommodating, outgoing, self-sacrificing, gentle, agreeable, practical, appropriate, clever, inoffensive, approachable, high-achieving, humble, available, tolerant, strong; perfect. Above all, I must play along.

I explore the question, “what if I don’t?” and live into the answer. As I take a left turn from my “regular” life, I try gardening. This series is an expression of the joy and freedom of shedding these expectations I’ve accumulated for myself within the many environments that have invariably imprinted on me.

Reacquainting with the earth, soil, sun and sweat on my skin, I begin to seemingly forget my anxieties. The simple beauty of a lotus flower just before it blooms is better than netflix. Laughing so hard my stomach hurts with a friend, both of our hands in the soil, restores my soul. Rain on my face, holding a praying mantis, nothing else matters.

I am nature. I must cry, laugh, scream, dance, hug, scribble, jump, play, drink water, run, love, forgive, forgive, forgive. Surrender. I am nature. I am wild.

The Artist

Shannon Mack is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She describes the origins of her work being derived from “of-the-moment” presence, in effect, leaving behind time capsules of the human experience. The layers that exist within her work are attempts to meet the moment with sincerity, each a foundation for the next, until a resolve is revealed. She is compelled by the time and labor invested in a “still” image, therefore making it an artifact in its own right; evidence of conscious and unconscious movements converging in a single tangible place.

Nestled along the lakeshore our gallery space provides a unique hub for impactful conversations, outreach, classes and film. We welcome professional artists from around the globe to showcase their art, tell their stories, and provide a space for meaningful connections to transpire.

Our gallery is always free to visit and is open during regular hours. Check our specific hours before visiting by calling the box office at 269-857-2399.

The magic that we create in our gallery space is only made possible thanks to the generous support of our sponsors throughout the year. We encourage you to explore the list of sponsors for each show and consider how you can thank them for helping us make art accessible to all in West Michigan.
