ICEBOUND! THE ORDEAL OF THE SS MICHIGAN
Valerie van Heest
Thursday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m.
|
Valerie van Heest, shipwreck hunter, author, artist and member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame, unfolds the fascinating tale of the search for the sunken remains of the 200-foot steamer the SS Michigan. A mystery that took years to unravel, van Heest and her team persisted to finally locate the intact remains of this historic vessel in deep water off Holland, Michigan.
Ms. van Heest is an explorer whose creative skills in writing, graphic design and filmmaking give us a tantalizing peak at the breathtaking underwater world that few will ever experience. She has explored and documented shipwrecks for over 20 years and her efforts recently led to an award from the Historical Society of Michigan for excellence in preserving and promoting State and local history. With a passion for all things creative, Valerie writes articles, produces documentary films, (two debuted at the Waterfront Film Festival), designs museum exhibits, and just appeared on an episode of History Channel exploring a Chicago shipwreck. Valerie serves as director of the non-profit, Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates and spearheads the team’s search for ships lost off our shores. And she is the author of the just released young readers’ book: Icebound! The Adventures of Young George Sheldon and the SS Michigan.

-- just in time for the holiday season.

Claudia Tyagi is a native of Detroit, Michigan. Her European heritage gave her early exposure to the joys of cooking and the family table. In London, November 1997, Claudia completed the examinations to earn the Master Sommelier diploma from the British & American Court of Master Sommeliers. At that time, she was only the seventh woman in the world to hold this certification. The Master Sommelier diploma is the only internationally recognized wine service credential and even today there are only 160 people in the world ever to have earned this certification which represents the pinnacle of wine service knowledge.
Currently Claudia works as a consultant and is involved with the Michigan wine making scene. She loves teaching classes and conducting tastings, and is deeply involved in local wine centered charities such as "A Night For Sight" and "Vin Voyage." Since the Liebler family's purchase of the Whitney in February of 2007, Claudia has been collaborating with them to bring about a fresh and exciting look in food and beverage in the glorious old mansion in Detroit's cultural center.
