“I've never painted before – this is the best day ever! I love art. When are you all coming back?" – Rolando, 4th grader in the “Growing Young Artists” program
This past summer we (12 young professionals + interns) brought our arts-infused Growing Young Artists program to more than 170 migrant students from Fennville and South Haven schools.
Working with Artist in Residence Sofia Ramirez Hernandez, the pre-K – 8th grade students developed a 7-act play, writing details for the script, building sets, creating costumes, and making life-sized puppets.
During the 2-week project based learning intensive, the students learned about putting on a theatrical performance, including managing back stage operations and creating advertising. They had great hands-on field trip experiences at the Grand Rapids Ballet, Mason Street Warehouse, and the Grand Rapids Art Museum. And they honed important soft skills like team work, collaboration, problem solving, and empathy.
Students presented their original play during the closing Fiesta at the SCA with parents and family in attendance.
Thanks to generous support from sponsors, Growing Young Artists is presented cost free to students in Fennville and South Haven.
