Real to Reel: Freedom to Marry

September 20 | 7:00 PM + post-film discussion
FREE admission

Our fall Real to Reel Series kicks off with the award-winning documentary, “Freedom to Marry” presented in partnership with the ACLU of Michigan.

The film tells the story of Evan Wolfson, the architect of same-sex marriage, and his colleagues who led a decades-long battle to win rights for LGBT people, culminating dramatically at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Winner of “Best Documentary” at the Savannah Film Festival, “Freedom to Marry”, directed by Eddie Rosenstein, is the surprising story of the most successful – and perhaps most inspiring – civil rights movement of our time.

The Boston Globe says “Freedom to Marry” is, “surprisingly suspenseful and thoroughly moving and inspiring.” The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette calls the film, “a definitive history of the course gay marriage took in the United States… nothing short of chilling.”

Join us for post-film discussion with Jay Kaplan, staff attorney for the ACLU of Michigan Nancy Katz & Margo Dichtelmiller LGBT Project, and Glenna DeJong and Marsha Caspar, the first same-sex couple to marry in Michigan (and named plaintiffs in a lawsuit suing the State of Michigan for not recognizing the legal marriages). Panelists will discuss the national and state landscape visa vis LGBTQ rights post-SCOTUS same-sex marriage decision and share personal reflections on their involvement in the fight for equality and inclusion.

Real to Reel Series sponsored by Beau Gratzer & Andy Knight, Saugatuck-Douglas Antique Market. “Freedom to Marry” program sponsored by David Balas & Jim Sellman, Carol Sarosik & Shelley Padnos, Glenna DeJong & Marsha Caspar.
