Our 2017 Real to Reel Series finishes off with the award-winning documentary, "The Great Alone," shot in the arctic of Alaska and packed with adventure and thrills that follows the inspiring comeback story of four-time Iditarod Champion.

After his father’s dramatic win of the 1978 Iditarod by a hair’s breadth, it seemed inevitable that Lance Mackey would one day mush his own dog sled team in the annual race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. Mackey was the first ever in history to win four consecutive Iditarod races - 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. He won the grueling event — which covers remote, barren and rugged stretches of the Alaska Range and the Bering Sea Coast — while overcoming challenges larger than mushing a team of dogs 1,000 miles across the largest state in the Union. The Great Alone chronicles Mackey’s life, from his sunniest days as a boy by his famous father's side and his painful fight with cancer to the 2013 Iditarod, his twelfth attempt at the race. But whether he wins or loses, Mackey’s indestructible love and passion for his canine companions means he’s never truly alone in the Arctic wilderness.

With an endless amount of strength and determinition, Lance continues to make his family, himself and the state of Alaska proud. "The Great Alone pulls viewers along every mile of Lance's emotional journey to become one of the greatest dog sled racers of all time."

Real to Reel Series sponsored by Beau Gratzer & Andy Knight, and Saugatuck-Douglas Antique Market.
