Surf Art

Join guest host David Lokker for a behind the scenes look at Tim Folkert’s surfboard design and building processes and the art he creates for his boards. Folkert is one of the featured artists in SCA’s exhibition “Surface Tension: Beauty & Fragility in Lake Michigan.” He's passionate about surfing and the Great Lakes, and melds those loves in his company Migration Surf.

Folkert is a West Michigan native who moved out to Santa Cruz, California after graduating from college. Out in Santa Cruz, he fell in love with surfing and ultimately became a production surfboard polisher.  In 2009 he began shaping under the Migration label in California. Five years later Folkert moved back to West Michigan bringing the Migration label with him. Migration specializes in custom handcrafted surfboards for the Great Lakes surfing community and beyond.

Lokker owns Landsharks and lives in Saugatuck with his wife and two daughters, and is a big fan of the Saugatuck Center for the Arts. He's a lifelong Saugatuck resident, a SHS and GVSU grad, and all around good Dutchman. Lokker likes oysters on the half shell, ice cold PBR, hockey, skiing, and all things winter. Lokker has never had a cavity, or broken a bone in his body. He drinks too much caffeine, and is a terrible dancer. When he's not at Landsharks, you can find him at the beach, hiking the dunes, or volunteering in the community.
